I am pretty sure its 11V - the amount of power you need.
You said that your dad is electrician, its not really my profession but i am pretty sure you can build some sort of device that will increase the amount of the V for a few secs and therefore will allow you to start. Ask your dad about it, just be careful :)
11V for a HDD lol?

Yes it's a fact that HDD's need a lot more power to start than to run but still 500mA should be enough if the manufacturer has made it as an USB HDD.

It does say this on the website for the hd though.

An optional cable is available for the few computers that limit bus power.

and its a double ended usb cable so u use 2 usb slots instead.

I thought about it before but fact is you don't have 2 USB ports on the head unit. Or do you??

500mA as far as i know, is the amount of electrons you can move through the item, it doesn't say anything about the amount of V it can give...

The USB standard is 5V.

Well as i said already, i think its possible to build a device (shouldn't be hard from what i heard) that will increase the amount of V to 11 for a few seconds, (if its 11 ofc) by charging and then releasing, or since he got 2 USB places there, he can take some sort of device that can provide the amount of V needed (like those devices that provide power to ur computer if there is power off) to connect it to the HD, and to connect the other USB to the car, then after the first USB will start the HD, he can use the head unit to do the rest.

First of all -

What do you have running in your car at the moment, any extras, such as anp Amp/Sub, Components, 6x9's? I know you was looking at upgrading your ICE, as I gave you links for some good stuff.

Now, if you dont have them installed, but are going to, I would seriously look at also upgrading your battery, to a better one (Could be expensive), or looking at "TB3" = The Big 3 Upgrade. This simply upgrades your standard wires, letting your car draw more power out of the battery, with less strain.

You can run the Harddrive seperate without using the cigarette lighter, im guessing just the way you would add an extra alarm, add an amp etc... just need a seperate wire to connect to the battery, and to the HDD, but again, could be tricky.

What you all have to think about is maybe the HDD its self does not use alot of power, but the Headunit is going to have to work harder aswell to read the HDD (As maybe this HU is only made mainly for flash drives), therefore the HU will also draw extra power out, aswell as everything already using the battery.

If your seriou about this, i'd suggest taking your car to an Auto Electrician place, or a please that specialises with ICE. Would cost money, but they will tell you exactly what you need, and do a good job of it, making it safer for your car.

If your going to do it yourself, then I honestly suggest cutting the cables to the lighter and then hooking them up to the USB cable directly. You can get additional cable and reroute the wires to wherever you want, and hook them up that way. You obviously lose the use of your lighter socket like this, but I don't think anyone uses that thing anyway.

If I were you though, I would honestly look at alternatives because the cost and effort to get everything to work, the potential problems makes me think it isn't worth it. The money you could end up spending on this could be used to buy some decent speakers and an amp/sub if you don't have one.

ICE specialists think everyone that has stuff like that in their car is a little rich boy who's parents have an endless supply of cash, they don't think that some people spend ages saving and stuff, and will be more than happy to charge in excess of £100 to do 15 minutes work in your car.

Depends where you go.

Anyways heres what someone I asked had to say

does the hardrive require power from a wall socket or does it function completely on USB?
if it works only on USB and the HU is too weak then there's not much you can do without fidling too much with the wires.
the USB requires 5 volts, so you can try providing those 5 volts some other way, or you could use a powered USB hub, but then you'd need to power the USB hub itself.

K i think i figured out what im going to do to, im guna just instead of cutting any wires im going to get:

http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/2822.htm
and
http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-USB-Cable-Dual-Power/dp/B000FKP7XA

plug the 2nd usb cable into it and the other into my head unit, then just re-route the wires from the cig lighter socket to the usb lighter adapater thing, that should work fine shouldnt it?

You mean, take out the wires from the Cig Lighter, and connect them together?

Its probably best and cheapest way I can think of. Just got to hope that nothing blows up lol, hard drive and head unit are new so should be covered by warenty if anything happens, I hope lol.
