Hey, i've just moved and am on Virgin internet at 20mb. However they seem to limit the download speed quite a lot on things like torrents and certain direct downloads. I'm usually only getting about 140kb/s max and this is at off peak times.

Yet i can download things like .rar at a speed of over 1.2mb/s, and streaming or playing online games seems to be fine.

I've read their terms and can see they mention limiting speeds of torrents and other filesharing programs during peak hours.

Is there any way i can get past this? I'd like to get over 1mb/s on anything i try and download.

the way i find out if they have limited ur net is running a speed test and see whats the highest u can get over a week, then if u think ur nets capped run a test and if its massively lowered then ye they capped u, however torrents also requires seeds cause sometimes I get 100 kb/s off a torrent after 30 minutes and then it will spike to 1mb/s because more people are sharing that specific part of the download

my download speed is 19Mbps, pretty much constant throughout the week, but my download speeds just don't reflect it.

at 20 mbps u should be getting a max of 2 mb/s from good hosts such as megaupload + are you on a router or are you wired?

because on a router speed can suffer greatly, from hosts without good bandwidth your speed will suffer/

Im on 30Mb with them never had a prob Torrents are allays slow but you are taking the file from other PC's so there upload must come in to it as well,

Also direct downloads rely on what the server the file you are downloading allow there are not many hat will allow you to d/load at 20mb

I honestly don't think seeds n stuff come into it.

Any time before midnight on a torrent I get less than 100kpbs on ANY torrent, but once it hits a certain time it automatically jumps up to my max download speed.

I'm not with Virgin btw, but it makes no diff to what Im saying

Seeds come into it massively lol, if you have 1 seed that means only one person is uploading the file, which means you can only download at their top upload speed, if you have 10 people seeding then you can download at a max of their combined upload speed, so depending on the file he is torrenting the speed will change because some files have more or less seeds than others

I know how seeds work. What I meant is I can have the same number of seeds at 11:59pm as 12:13am and there be a huge difference in the actual download speed that I get purely because of the time.

No, the huge difference in download speed is not due to the time lol. It's because of the part of the file you are downloading, if it's going faster then more people who are currently seeding have already downloaded that part of the file and are uploading it.

my torrent has plenty of speeds, i've downloaded the same file before at my last house and got much better speeds.

However i've never actually looked at the download limit after 12, so will check tonight to see if it jumps up.

I download on torrents 1002mb/s on 20mb Virgin.

Only time I get slow speeds on them is is seeds are low.

I also download files from Megaupload at a steady 1-2mb/s too.

no time plays a part too for some reason, i have the same thing as tai, as soon as its turns 12.00 my speeds go to max with torrents, with the same amount of seeds as before

i have tested this numerous times and its always dead on 12 midnight.

.

1.2mb/s is slow for 20mb btw. you should be doubling that and then some.

If there is a time thing, surely it would have to do with your isp restricting your download speed until midnight?
