i bought an £80 keyboard and mouse a few months ago. but lately, when i turned my computer on the keys dont work. all the calculate buttons will work etc, but not the letters or anything.

i look in the keyboard program, and notice that theres no driver present when its not working. and the only way to get it working is to restore my computer to a time when it was (very annoying)

after getting fed up, today i bought a cheap wired keyboard.

also today, i bought a new external hard drive. the first few usb ports i tried it in, said device not recognised. it seems to say this with most usb devices i attempt to plug in.

anyway, after finding a port that does work. it ran perfectly. i then restarted my computer later that day, and when booting back up, the hard drive wasnt present. and the only way to get it working was to unplug it and go through the whole annoying proccess again.

sorry for the long story, but is there any reason for this. and any way i can fix it?

im running vista business 32bit.

That sounds like a bloody fruity problem to me.

Have you installed the compatibility, performance & reliability packs?

Are you testing Vista SP1?

Which motherboard are you using?

Are the faulty ports built into the motherboard, or wired through the case?

Have you gone into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Reliability and Performance Monitor > Reliability Monitor to check for any recurring errors? If so, what are the errors?

Sorry for the barrage of questions, it's just not a problem I've encountered.

The only vista installations ive done are the normal automatic updates.

its an old asus P4R800-VM motherboard

and the faulty port occur both on the motherboard, and ones wired through the case.

just checking the reliability monitor, ive had no hardware failures show up every.

in event viewer. i have tons of these warning messages

'An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR3 during a paging operation.'

about 300 in the last hour. (though i am transferring 100gb of data to this new drive so that could be why)

i have one error.

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
sfdrv01
sfhlp02
sfsync02

but apart from that i have no idea. the hard drive is working fine, but it doesnt load when i boot windows. and takes about 10 trys in different usb ports before it works.

your saying my motherboard is too old for vista? yeah that probly sounds right.

every hardware i attach to it is vista certified. the external hdd is a seagate freeagent. and the keyboard was a brand new £90 logic.

no compatability issues found at all. like i said, once its in, it works fine. its just that it takes about 10 trys untill it decides to install the device.
