Why cant i boot a disk up on start up?

well im just wondering my disk drives on 1 of my pc`s have been playing up recently i wanted to boot a windows disk in it so on start up clicked F8 selected the drive the disk was in hit enter and it just carried on loading windows like normal. so obviusly i tried different disk drives they all do different weird things each :S on one of them i select it to be booted up and it says searching for Boot record or something then just fails and boots windows normally :S im totaly confused some one help :S!!!

EDIT:they now read nothing at all no disk :Swhen i click properties it says all correctly working. :S but its not :( Help help

Is it a copied disc?? If so you need the boot sector or something (Urban knows what i mean, because he helped me :P )

i think i may need some drivers for it tbh as i put the disk in nothing happens there isnt a little icon for the drive in my comp either :S iv set it to boot 1st never the elss it just loads windows normally as if i cant use the disk drive itsself need some drivers maybe!

EDIT:I can now see the icon for the disk but when i go to boot a bootable disk on start up i get this:

"Searching for Boot Record From Cd Rom"

then after see`ing that for about 5 seconds it continues to load windows like normal. any help very confusing
