As Soul said, levelling is very easy compared to something like Mir and you'll find the vast majority of your levelling is done through quests and not EXP grinding as you do in Mir.
I think it's safe to assume that you're going to roll on a PvP server in which case you should be aware that you won't be able to play characters from both factions on the same PvP server. WoW is split in two, the Alliance and the Horde. Your character's race determines your faction, Human, Night Elf, Dwarf and Gnome are Alliance, Orc, Troll, Tauren and Undead are Horde. The only way you can interact with the opposing faction is via pre-programmed emotes. You can't group with one another, talk to one another or use beneficial spells on one another (heals, buffs, etc). If you chose an Alliance character on a PvP server you are stuck with only being able to play Alliance characters, same for Horde, if you chose Horde, you can only play Horde characters. So it would be wise to discuss with your friend which faction/races you would both like to be to ensure that you can group with each other. Not only that but the starting areas for each race are different. In most cases this isn't a problem but if one of you wants to roll a Night Elf and the other doesn't, chances are that you won't see each other until around level 20. I'd actually advise against grouping with people until about level 15 purely so that you can take your time to do things the way you want and not have to worry about someone else. It's also more of a hinderance at that level too. The other thing that's worth noting is that each faction has one class that is unique to them, on Alliance side it's Paladins (teh suck), on Horde it's Shaman (teh pwn).
A word of advice too, and this goes to all people reading this who aren't level 60 yet. Whist it is true that being level 60 can be great fun it's also worth noting that unless you're in a large, powerful guild, it can be difficult to get invites to higher level dungeons and other such stuff especially if you're a class which isn't in high demand (Warrior, Hunter, Rogue generally have trouble getting into groups on my server). Take your time, don't rush and, most importantly, enjoy your time pre-60, it's where some of your most memorable moments come from.
... Okay, kind of went off on one there. Sorry
