Right, just curious on what you guys would do if your lens on the xbox begins failing to read games. Works on the odd occasion of opening the disc tray and closing it or restarting the console, I have a lens cleaning disc, it won't even register.

Now I've been told if i open the case to clean the lens it voids the warranty [which seems hardly fair in my case]. So would my only option be sending it to microsoft?

Cheers.

Only takes 2 weeks for it to be returned so yes, just make sure you phone them to aware them of your return. However it can be opened and re-sealed with ease without them noticing (useing heat eg: a hairdryer), you would need somebody who has done this before though to do it properly.

cleaning the lens with a non sratch cloth, like one for cleaning glasses. Iv had the problem with my ps2 and ps3 and opening and cleaning the lens solved any problem, but i wouldn't open it unless you know what you are doing.

If it's under warranty send it to MS, if not, find out what DVD make you have - there are guides where you can find out from the ejected drawer. Then go on EBAY and order a new laser. Normally very easy to install but you would need some proper screwdrivers to take it to bits and not recommended if you aren't very techie. If you are very techie, you could increase the laser voltage using the variable resistor on the assembly. Just increase by like 5 - 10% and you will probably find it reads again fine for a period of time. You would need a jewelers screwdriver to adjust it, and a multimeter to check current resistance.

EDIT: Oh btw, on older 360's they scratch discs WITH the laser lens, so you might find that the reason it's not reading is because it's been scuffing your discs. If that's the case then get some isoprop or pure alchohol and clean the laser lens manually (yes, you'd need to take the drive casing off but it's pretty easy) and use something like one of those polishing cloths that people use on LCD screens - they are ideal for cleaning lenses (and DVD's that appear to be scratched btw).

had this problem with an xbox i bought before, i fixed it by replacing the entire cd drive but you have to use the same circuit board for the key to be recognized unless your flashing it.

i was told by a guy in a consol repairs shop to never use alcohol to clean the lenses, yes it does clean it but it can degrade the lens aparently.

Yea the drive has to have the same registry key as the motherboard or it wont work.
