Hi guys,

Just wondering peoples opinion on this, currently writing a dissertation on computer gaming law, and during my research came across a copyright law to do with computer based copyright which states the copyright lasts for 50 years from the end of the calendar year in which the work is made(section 12(7), CDPA). therefore if my calculations are correct, private servers will be legal as of 2051?

Thoughts?

I have no idea about any of this but I'm sure Video games comprise of a few copyright laws, 50 for computer generated graphics and 95 to 120 years for , well, the game itself (gameplay, code, etc).

I've done a quick search on it and seems that there a few definitions of what can actually be protected (most state that its 95 years for, the whole game and others state otherwise), I read that Authorial additions have somewhat shortened / diminished most copyright laws on Graphical content, thus given players a more authored role in games (modding / transmogging and creating combinations of which only exist with the players presence), of-which I sourced from Boyden.

I did find another interesting quote from Boyden of which somewhat diminishes the 95 to 120 years protection law (U.S)(protecting the idea / gameplay / content of a video game).

the experience of play is supplied by the players, not the game designer... Even video games, despite being comprised of software, audiovisual elements, plots, graphics, and characters, nevertheless have an uncopyrightable core: the actual play of the game... Systems are shells into which users pour meaning (Boyden, 2011a, p. 479).

Do you seriously think people will be remotely interested in a game like Mir or its copyright in the year 2051 ?
I would assume (hope) technology advances far enough for the equivalent of mmos to be networked directly to your brain so you're totally immersed in a gaming environment, maybe even like Total Recall.
That said, there'll be copyright issues on future technology and gaming so I daresay there'll be the equivalent of private servers too.
Imagine being in a brain network and it gets hacked or DoS'd.

lol thing is: you're probably researching european/american laws?
any mir 'content' is likely registered in korean or chinese copyright so they fall under those laws,
it's true there are international deals etc but when it comes down to difference between 50 and 95 year stuff : only the korean/chinese version is gonna matter.
in europe/america the company's that decide to run the game dont actualy register to many copyrights of their own (at most they register some specific translations etc)
