ADSL network

Networking question guys:

I need some help because I'm getting IP conflicts on my network at the Internet Café I'm setting up.

My current setup is:

Now, I'm thinking a hub is too stupid to route all those packets am I right? I was assuming that since the ADSL router has a hub embedded, it would do the packet routing even across another hub ... I think I'm wrong. Do I need some kind of network switch?

This is my first ADSL network so bare with me, sorry!

I hope you can help + I need some help before the midnight hour lol; I was intending to open the shop tomorrow, I'm a three months behind schedule already :x

Just get your router run your router into your main pc then put a hub on the router to the other pc`s. pretty simple.

o.O that's what I've done mate... results in IP conflicts

(i.e. the main compute always works, because it is connected directly to the ADSL router through Ethernet Port 1, but the hub is connected to Ethernet Port 2 on the router, which supplies all the other computers. I'm assuming the hub is too dumb to shape traffic, and is broadcasting every packet to every computer hence the "IP conflict"... dunno HELP!!! )

get a modem run it to ur main pc then run ur pc to the hub.

Ah ok I understand you now, but in that case do I have to meddle with ICS and if so, do you have any directs/instructions for me please?

Also the wire between the computer and hub, is it a "straight-through" or "cross-over" ethernet cable?

RJ-11 from Filter to Modem, RJ-45 straigh-through from Modem to computer ...

im using a cross over atm

basically its only needed to connect 2 pcs "straight through" without the need of a hub...

try replacing that cross over with a norm cable, not sure how it would handle being dealt with as a normal wire

Yea BT's ADSL router (BT Home Hub) has a built in hub, so the cable need is effectively reversed.

I assume the modem-router-hub needs a (crossover) cable to connect to the external hub and from this point normal ethernet cables to PCs.

I will try it in 4 hours, when I'm in the shop, its 5AM and I havn't slept yet lol

you dont need to use no cross overs all you will need to do is get router connection working on your main office ps i asume with plenty of firewalls then use a non cross over going from the ethernet port of your main pc which has the modem to your hub then from your hub to all your other pc`s.
Then simply run your network config on the main pc 1st get it all configured from there. Then goto the other pc`s use the netwrok wizzard on them and it should all work no cross over network cables needed hope this helps.

I would also strongly advise NOT using a hub, and getting a proper switch.
You have 16 pcs running off a hub, your gonna get lots of collisions, and general poor performance.

IP Conflicts are usually when you give 2 machines the same IP.
Set them all to DHCP and make sure the DHCP Server (whether its your main pc or the modem,1 or the other not both) has enough IPs in its allowed block (16 pcs, so give it 32 to be safe) Alternatively give each pc a number manually.

I would use something like:

Server: 192.168.0.1

Desk1 Pc1: 192.168.0.11
Desk1 Pc2: 192.168.0.12
Desk1 Pc3: 192.168.0.13
Desk1 Pc4: 192.168.0.14
Desk1 Pc5: 192.168.0.15

Desk2 Pc1: 192.168.0.21
Desk2 Pc2: 192.168.0.22
Desk2 Pc3: 192.168.0.23
Desk2 Pc4: 192.168.0.24
Desk2 Pc5: 192.168.0.25

Desk3 Pc1: 192.168.0.31
Desk3 Pc2: 192.168.0.32
Desk3 Pc3: 192.168.0.33
Desk3 Pc4: 192.168.0.34
Desk3 Pc5: 192.168.0.35

Then you can tell easily what comp was used when looking at any logs.

Ty dude, its all working now. I can't get a switch at the moment until first month's yield. I'm willing to risk a bit of bad performance for now :x

Does anyone know a good internet café software for:

• Client Computer lock-down and control (including remote PC).
• Ability to block pornography, filter bad sites etc.
• Typical internet cafe things.

I'm using CybercaféPro at the moment, because of its Account sytems. It lets me charge users to use games with CD-Keys or Steam accounts, and also for the XBOX360s and PS2s... for everything else it sux.

Beaten to it by Dataforce but I was going to say drop ICS. I had quite a few problems on my work LAN with it but since installing a Netgear ADSL/Modem/Router using DHCP the problems have evaporated.
I recommend Netgear. Never had any problems over several years.
