You know I still find it hard to come to terms with why Shi'ahs do that, especially since the Koran expressly says:
"No man shall bear the burden of another".
They make themselves bleed, because of the war between two factions of Islam over a political issue of succession. The Shi'ahs wanted a mocharch style Caliphate, the Sunnis wanted a democratic elected Caliphate. They were the majority and they voted for Hussayn I believe (not Sadam -_-) whilst the Shi'ahs believed Ali had succession rights because he was in the lineage of the Prophet. (btw I'm talking about 1400 years ago)

Ps - If any collywobble Muslim comes up to you and says Islam is the religion of Peace; say no it isn't, it is the Religion of Surrender. The word 'Ibadah' which is translated in context as 'Worship' actually routes from the word Slavery.
So every Muslim is a slave of Allah. Very harsh terminology, and rightly so, it shouldn't be watered down from the original meaning.
It does have a 'upside' though. Ibadah or 'worship' also covers everything from 'smiling' to giving 'charity'. They're all forms of ibadah.
For Shi'ahs that is also Ibadah. Geez I dunno, they should stop doing it, period.
