For people thinking about putting a server online

I read it every day - another server (any) goes online when its not ready for the public in any shape or form, lasts a few weeks then its dead.....People are sick to the back teeth of this, so here are some things to think about before you start posting about yet another Server for people to play on:

1. Make sure you know what you are doing, the files work, the game can be accessed online, the forum set up and a place for people to get the client / Updates..

2. Running a Online Server requires a machine (at least one) be left on 24/7 - this means it gonna make some sort of noise 24/7 as well (unless you have a whisper quiet one or store it in the loft or something).

3. The line you use for the server will have limits - such as 256K upload - meaning all those things you used to use your line for is now offlimits such as Video Chat, Voice chat, downloading Porn, Playing games online and so forth...Best way is to get a seperate line for the server.

4. Do people really need yet another MIR2 or MIR3 Server online? Ask yourself why is your different. Will it matter to you when only 2-3 are online on some days, will this spell the end for the server?

5. Forums - this will be flooded to death with people who:
* Have problems connecting
* Have trouble finding the files
* Have ingame problems
* Complain about the drops
* Complain about the Exp
* Post bugs you would not have found

6. In game as GM you will constatly be PM'd from people asking all sort of questions such as "Can your Tele me to ..." or "Can you give me ..." and so forth.

After taking all that and more in - if your still happy that your server is the best then good on you and hope that it lasts for some time but people im sure by now are just a tad sick of joining a server, downloading all the patches etc, playing for so long and then the server goes down as you the host cannot be arsed any more because of some problem or another..

Im sure this has been posted about before but the posts in the various sections tell me people are really not getting it, they install MIR2, get it online while still testing it and then there mother tells them they cannot have that running all the time - server dies....

i think most people already know this, but its all good.
my server only didnt go up because i ran out of disk space, therefore having to delete mir & all my mir files.

I agree its probably the wrong place to post it but as it was not directed at any perticlular MMORPG I though general section suited it best..

Ref the point on most people know this - I agree - its all common sense but what happens in reality is people get the server files and like the idea of been GM, people playing on THERE server and so forth but they dont give it much thought and once they run into problems the server genaally goes down..

Take myself, I had a long hard think about putting a MIR3 JOB server on, now my machine is pretty quiet and powerfull enough (little Shuttle case thing) and Im more than capable of fixing the problems I find but the one thing that stopped me dead was my Line, i need it for other things and I beleive there is enough MIR3 JOB servers on right about now that are more than good enough for the job such as (in nor perticular order by the way):

Xanders One
Triton One (Olypia)
NotMeAgain Server

In a ideal world - there would only be so many servers online - thus meaning more people to play on them rather than having 20+ servers online with 5-10 people on each...

Anyhow - I hope I have made at least a couple of people have a think before they rush more online, probably not like but I can alway try eh!!

Many thanks for the Sticky - I wrote it from experience of both hosting a server and of course playing one. I suppose i wrote this after reading the adverts in the mir 1.4 section and laughed when one came online only to be offline within days it seemed..

Feel free to add any other advice for people thinking about hosting a server or indeed advertising one, my only advice here is let your mates play first, let it run for a while before even thinking about sticking an Advert for the general public then at least your happy (as a host) that it will stay up for a little while rather than days...

I am 18. I did not dedicated my life hosting my MIR2-NET. I have a g/f, social life, not spending hours and hours on pc. (only when i am watching a movie or making updates ... .

I hosted 1 year / no costs. :P with hosting patches, server pc.
IF YOU WHANT YOU CAN DO ANITHING.

MIR2-NET is online from about 1 year ... hmm maybe more dont know exacly :P. And will be online maybe one more year or who knows...till ppl will start to not play it. I am reopening from level 7 a DSY version, more translated, the old mir2-net was f u k e d by cheats...npc cheat and bla bla bla...hate CHEATS,DSY updated with latest mobs and items till i manage to work on mir1.9 and disable all cheats.

You can have a server 24/7, you can have a social life, you can have a server hosted years.....is only up to you if your ready to face bad ppl who dont respect your work. Lazy ppl, and leeches... and good ppl :P hehe :P

RESPECT FOR ALL 24/7 SERVERS THAT ARE ONLINE AND WERE PPL REALLY HAVING FUN.

Corrupt server u give items to ur mates and u suck up to the hoster and give him items cos u all use the internet on ur lil internet cafe

servers suck end of, nothing like they used to be (not even close to p69 and weown's standards, which i must say were low at best).

Val'hor is a proper server, but it didnt get finished so no1 got to see its greatness .

tbh I think people should stop with the slagging, a private server is a means to have fun and for me a chance to get away from the real world for a while...

Just play the game, have some fun and enjoy it imo

Thats exacly what I am doing using Mir1.9 files, wasnt saying they not allowed to or what to do was expressing my views :P
