In regards to 'donations' I think the best approach would be to offer cosmetic items and small boosts / advantages only, as people have already mentioned. With regards to XP potions I personally wouldn't mind 1.2x pots limited to 1 per day. However, I think there's room for more creative ideas rather than simple XP potions.
One way would to be offer an optional monthly sub, cheap-ish price say £5 per month.
Possible benefits:
- 1.2x XP (some people wouldn't like this, but IMO this would be fine as long as XP pots aren't there too)
- Only subbers can list items on the TrustMerchant (everyone can buy, only subbers can list)
- Only subbers can lead a guild
- Bigger bank
- etc
Of course this "freemium" method could be used in conjunction with cosmetic items.
Another method I've thought of would involve XP pots, but before you all screw your faces up and cry pay2win - listen:
They should start scheduling regular events, maybe a weekly few hour XP or drop event (or both, alternate based on player preference or whatever) where everyone gets 1.2x XP or drop. But you can purchase an XP/drop pot, which you can only use for the duration of this event which will give you 2x XP for the duration of this event - event could last ~3h, boost could cost £3-5?. You can only use ONE, and only use it for the duration of the event, and it should be visible to other players that you're using the item. If you are killed, this item is dropped (100% chance) and your killer (or friend) can pick it up and use it for the rest of the event - and you won't be able to just buy another (until next event ofc).
This would be great IMO, the event would get everyone on hunting together, donating, and PKing. And it gives good players/guilds who don't / can't donate a chance to gain "paid for" benefits for free.
Weekly / monthly scheduled events would be great, and ones that encourage donations would definitely motivate the GM's to get on and run them for us.
