What type of LAN are you attempting to create? Peer to peer, or are you using an access point(eg. Hub or Switch)/router? When you link two computers, windows xp will automatically recognise there is a LAN, therefore it sounds to me that you might be using the wrong network cables, are you using Patch or Crossover?

You shouldnt need to make a local area connection.... if you have a network card in your PC you should be able to plug it into the modem/router and run the install CD and bobs yer uncle.

If you cant get a connection, chances are theres no drivers/f00ked drivers on your lan adaptor.... ive never seen a situation ever were you have to run the 'create a local area connection wizard' to get connected to broadband.

check all your hardware in device manager, if ok, re-install drivers for your LAN card, then re-install any CD that came with your broadband package. Also make sure your not using reverse LAN cables, ie. crossover when you should be using patch & patch when you should be using crossover etc.

Urban may be able to help further, but do all them checks first mate and wait for him to come online if you dont get it sorted first.
