I actually tried to do this with a friends new iPhone 4. I held it in a death grip for nearly a minute and the only thing that happened was the signal strength went from 3 bars to 4. Sucks for those who have dodgy ones though

3 are offering the phones at a cheap'ish price compared to other networks, i know that much.
That's in terms of how much you pay for the phone when you take out the contract
