You run software on it, that's it. Nothing happens to the hardware. Mine's been jailbroken for around 97% of the time i've had it.

But er no it doesn't. You'll lose the jailbreak but that's it the iPhone will still work fine. On a 3G or less you can just go back to an older firmware and re-jailbreak. And if you're on a 3GS while being a little more difficult will always be jailbreakable though you may have to wait a while for the new jailbreak to be released.
You cannot break an iPhone with software. The thing has two recovery modes to save its ass should something go wrong.
Nah Milo, sometimes the Jailbreaking effects the phones start up software, i.e when u go to update it, it corrupts so when u go to plug it into itunes to restore the software to the basic, you can't as it just doesn't sync with the computer anymore.

No it doesn't lol. I've been jailbreaking since the 1st iPhone and been around the scene for it. I've never heard of a permanently bricked iPhone from software. Either Recovery mode or DFU Mode will get you back up and running though it might take a bit of work. People might believe their phone is bricked but they are wrong.
-edit- I should probably mention that it is of course possible to permanently brick the iPhone but you personally have to **** with files that no normal user would **** with.

So in a Microsoft way of speaking.. You can JailBreak it, Fu-ck it up, and just wipe it, ie re-install the Apple OS system?
yes and no, If what milo's saying is true, then its about a 80/20 chance it could worki'm guessing but is it worth risking the 20% for hard earned money?, but also as soon as your phones jailbroken the warrenty becomes invalid, so if u do break it, and u send it back to get fixed, they will know, and as its breaking the T&C you won't get a replacement.

You can not brick an iPhone by jailbreaking, unless you SSL into it and delete or edit some files which cause it to, I dunno maybe use too much processor and overheat or something...
But usually all people (like me) do is just use jailbreak to edit sound files, get different apps such as a custom text app (I use biteSMS).

It is no were near 80/20. More like 99.9999999/0.0000001% chance of failing and breaking the device. And Apple cannot detect that your iPhone is jailbroken if the thing won't turn on. If it's still working and you need to return it for whatever reason you can just restore back to the original Firmware and they will know no difference.
Jailbreaking is as safe as installing official iOS firmwares and are as likely to break.
-edit- I jailbreak for Multitasking (Though with 4.0 I don't need that), SBSettings (Easy way to change settings on the fly), emulators, yxflash (divx/xvid player) and some other small things. I like that it opens the phone enough to do exactly what I want on a phone.

I think I'll wait till I become quite familiar with it all before I jailbreak it tbh, anyone know what Vodafone's 3g signal is like in/around Newcastle?

Vodafone's 3G signal around the Stoke/Cheshire area is fine for me and don't worry, chances are you'll be jailbreaking after a week of owning an iphone.
I've been north, south, east & west of England, Vodafone has never let me down.
The only place I don't get signal is Weybridge train station whilst stationary.

To whoever said il jailbreak within a week.. Im not paying around £800 for a phone and risking braking it lol. I have no idea how Apple works.
