Scenario #21 from 'Leo's guide to the embarkation of the extinguishing of western civilisation':

Yes. See the great thing about computers is they're electronic. Now the internet, funnily enough runs on computers and most of its infastructure to homes is connected through copper cable lines.

So all the user need do is place a signifficant charge down the line. The problem arises in that the 'direct' connection to you also has millions of links elsewhere to other machines. So in order to get your machine, he will also inavoidably get several thousand machines too (more noticeably nearer the point of origin). All he needs is a couple of hundred power stations (enough to ensure theres still a high enough voltage after travelling through thousands of miles of cable).

Problems;
-Fibre isn't conductive, and a lot of the telephone network is made up of this.
-Cables burning due to resistance and therefore cutting the route.
-Getting a couple of hundred power stations under your own control.
-The user suggesting it has the intelligence of George W Bush without the puppetmasters.

Solution:
Goto your house and plug the power station(s) into your telephone line there... or cross tehe telephone line with your mains supply. Whatevers more feasable at the time.

You think thats wacky... you should see the rest of my ideas ;). Did you people know Im the one who apparently looks after you lot :P *twitches timmy style*

Don't blame me, the idiot above who thinks he was the direct cause of a meltdown is the one that bumped it!
/Leo

God damn it, don't lie.

I believe I got an F in electronics, but even I know the principle behind a transformer, it's a step-down device that controls the power going into a device.

This is known as a PSU in the common computer, and you know the plug thing that goes into the wall? It has a majig in it called a fuse, if the power input gets too strong, the fuse blows. This is known as a blown fuse.

I think what you really mean is your mate thought it'd be funny to stick his computer inside an oven and see what happens. Don't be so stupid, do you really think that the same power output that comes out of your plug socket is going into your mouse?

The closest that anyone could come to blowing your computer is some kind of remote access that will over clock your hardware, or shut down your fans. Power, no.

That would be two seperate issues totally unrelated to anything a virus could do.
