Ok I know my view will be regarded as pretty biased - a bit like the GMs..
But the most sensible solution in my opinion would have been;
1) email or forum pm sent to the offending account holder
2) temporary account ban and warning of future conduct
3) delete / rename the offensive character name

Offensive names such as the thread starter, are common. That's like attempting to ban people who swear in the game. Things like the mentioned are expected on the internet, lets face it. Stop being childish, you know full well what is and isn't acceptable.

Having swear words that may or may not be offensive to people is one thing. But to go around with a name like what you were banned for is just such OBVIOUS intention to be hurtful...it's not insultive, it's fking disrepsectful and over the line. But not only did he create a name, he also "joked" about recruiting for Isis....it's like adding salt to the wound. It's this pathetic mixture of an attempt to cause hurt to people that has got you banned....not a fking name.

You could just ban me and turn your back on the situation - also enforcing yourself the last word. That would really prove a point
It's quite possible for me to be a helpful and active part of the community - and something I would prefer too, believe it or not.
It's also quite possible for me to get banned, make a new account, or not even bother at all. I could quite comfortably walk away from this game/forum without any regret - but I like mir, and this is the best server around currently.

Try not to be so personal. I'm pretty relaxed about the situation, but would have appreciated even a single PM about the ban before other server players brought it to the public forum table.

This could be shooting myself in the foot a bit - but if the character JihadJohn means the wizard OriginalMampi on the same account should be banned, why isn't my OriginalMonkpi monk banned on a different account? It hasn't stopped me playing, but it has removed the 'offensive' name - as deleting that character and leaving my wizard would have. Or just ban any accounts I make, and I will play a different game / server.

Sorry for quoting you directly but it is one of the few reasonably written posts on this thread. As somebody who has grown up in a military/ police environment I have always valued what is being fought for and what is being done to keep us safe. However I also think we have the right to say whatever the hell we want as long as it is legal, and whilst I honestly think mampi is a childish immature **** with no morals to even think his jihadi john Incident was funny... His name is essentially no more taboo than Taliban or similar, both will upset anyone effected by such things equally and to ban his entire account whilst other offensive names are allowed to exist is out of order

End of the day, it was childish. But the punishment was extreme. Can anyone see the irony?

A temp ban and a warning, both personally to Mampi and a server wide forum post, instructing and enforcing the rule would have been the correct way to do it.

No one is arguing that what was done was immature and silly, but it sure as hell isn't fitting of the punishment.

You also say it yourself. He JOKED about isis, if we can't laugh in the face of diversity and potential threats like this jihadi John fella, then we may as well just bend over now and let them win.
