You should buy DVD reader head unit and then burn all your songs instead of putting HD.
4.7 GB per DVD = 4700 mins of music = 78 hours and 20 mins of music. And you can burn any amount of DVDs you want.
A DVD reader mind you uses more power for both spinning up and any other state than a HDD. Thats going from the reader for computers however, but i'd assume it couldn't be much different for the standalone readers for cars.

How about you **** off, unless you want me to trundle around correcting every typo you make.

Like I, and everyone else thats smart has said is that there is a limited capacity, there will probably be no impact, but if he's running a sub, amp, neon light then there could be issues.

Also if you use "..." it implies a pause before you carry on, so ending a sentence with it and not continuing is quite moronic. What little respect I had for you as a person is now gone, seeing as your obviously in the "pussy patrol" that comb these forums looking for any miniscule reason they can use to get one over on me.
Isn't that what you fill your day with usually? Not correcting mine, but others spelling mistakes? Yes yours was a spelling mistake, not a typo. I was actually just messing around and noticed the mistake by accident, however the way you went crazy about it is funny at the least. Maybe there is a reason behind this ''pussy patrol''?

And i haven't shown disagreement anywhere. What i am telling you is that if the power usage was too much drain on the battery, the problems would already be noticed because the amount of power a small hard disk requires will have virtually made no difference.

May very well be so, and as English isn't my mother tongue i won't even argue. The little respect you had for me i'm afraid i can't give two ****s about. This is just a virtual forum with people that are virtual... for me at least

Those head units are built for cars, you can assume that they wont take too much power...

I can assume they use the same technology and therefore use around the same power that a PC compatible DVD reader which is more than a HDD.

This argument is not relevant... DeathWish said that he don't want anything that go on his light cigarette, so you cannot use the car battery, and the head unit does not give enough power... so does it really matter?....

Just so everyone knows, I have this head unit:

http://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/products/car/cd_receivers/KDC-W6537U/details/

It says this about the USB:

USB Version compatibility 1.1 / 2.0
File System FAT 16/32
Maximum Supply current 500mA

I have about 27GB's of music on my pc n i want it all in my car so i got a portable hard drive thinking it should work fine cuz i thort a usb slot on a pc was 500mA which is what the head unit supposedly gives off.

Although the DVD thing sounds like a good idea I really cant be bothered with CD's/DVD's cuz its just annoying imo.

I think your 2.5" drive mite have worked cuz its 60GB which im guessing uses abit less power. My drive is 120GB FAT32 so it should read it fine I just need to sort the power problem.

I was looking up to find the layout of a USB cable so I could try connecting the power cables to somewhere else if I ever try cuting the cable open. Anyway I found this:

1 Red 5 Volt
2 White Data -
3 Green Data +
4 Black Ground

From what id guess is that all I need to do is connect the Red and Black cables up somewhere, but do I need an inverter to swap AC to DC or whatever? And if I didn't and connected the power cable somewhere is there anything that would stop it from trying to consume all the power and blowing up or something?

AC is battery power isnt it? and then DC is like house? so if I guess im getting battery power from my car and then I need it in "house format" to power the hard drive? Im not really sure what im on about im just trying to think up some ideas.

Why cant you use the car battery? You can use the car battery... where fluck do you think the cigarette lighter gets its power lol.

Unless you want him to mess with his car, the cigarette lighter is the only place he can use to take power from the car battery... and just like you said what i told that guy how to change the format of the video back then in a different way, your way is just dumb. but unlike what i suggested then, the results here are different, here he will have to mess with his car, something i don't recommend... and he will have to go with HD on his car all the time, something that may look a bit pathetic if he don't find a really good place to put it.. and its not that small that you can just hide it somewhere...

EDIT:
deathwish i suggest you try it at least once, you wont be able to hear the amount of songs in 1 CD in the time you are using the car (unless you work is to deliver stuff), so just take CD, put ur favorite songs, and go with it. If you want some other songs, its really pretty fast to burn another one -3mins and you got new one. beside you won't have to go with HD in your car ^^

Thats it. Here i stop trying to understand what you are saying. How the hell is taking a HDD in your car pathetic?

Right. DW - to manually give power through the USB cable you need 5V which a car battery isn't capable of doing however it's something i for one wouldn't suggest doing as you will probably just fry your HDD. The HDD should work by the specifications of the head unit considering they promise 500mA from the port which should be enough for powering on the HDD as thats the USB standard so if it worked on your PC, then the head unit is the problematic thing here thats not giving the promised power. Can you try any other HDD's with your head unit?

im thinking of maybe going behind the cigarette lighter and trying to like get a cable from that to where ever I want as well as still having the normal cable going to the cigarette lighter.

Na I havnt got any other usb hard drives :S, things like usb pen drives work fine though.

My dads an electrician so I might ask him if he can use 1 of his tool thingies to see what the usb connection from the head unit is actually giving power wise but im not sure if he can.

And if its not 500mA then I guess ill just send back the head unit.

just think about it... think about the size and the HDD, and think where you can put it without the wiring to annoy you... thats why its pathetic.

Pen drives hardly take any power.

Checking the head unit is probably the best bet.

In the glove compartment for example, or in the CD box (if there is one) or under the seat... options are endless. You are talking about the HDD as if it's the size of a football.

My guess is that the problem is that at the start, the device might need a big amount of power to start, and this is why the head unit cannot work with it.

Yep thats what I think it is as well, just needs to a small boost of power at the start to get it running.

Ill try find out how much power is actually comming from the head units usb port anyway when I get chance.

I am pretty sure its 11V - the amount of power you need.
You said that your dad is electrician, its not really my profession but i am pretty sure you can build some sort of device that will increase the amount of the V for a few secs and therefore will allow you to start. Ask your dad about it, just be careful :)

LOL, since when do they make the HD on this size?
Damn i need to get update on the hardware faster...
anyway, it will still be a bit annoying with the wiring but shouldn't be a big problem i suppose... thought its one of the normal HD which is way bigger...
