RPG = Role playing Game - you take on a fantasy Char doing quests etc, as per real life, you slowly get stronger the longer you play. MMO bit - this is a RPG at heart but the difference is it allows many people to play online at the same time. Professional Companies who run MMORPG want YOU the customer to pay money each month, as its a business - longer you play, the more they make - simple.

Private server code was "leaked" as in not meant to be public domain, people then took this code, upped the exp and messed with the values, thus unbalancing the game as a whole..

People do not want to play a Private server for months, years etc - they want to level FAST through the noob stages and get all the kit that is uber rare on a real server. They get to level 50+ and have everything in game after a few months of playing...Where do they go from here? well they can join another server, start noob level again, try out the maps renamed with different mob names and meet another set of people to play along side. They have probably played MIR2 to death on the real server, maybe private servers to and now trying mir3 hoping for a new experience maybe.

Now they get bored, they post like a mad person on the said forums, we want better mobs, more quests, better items, new spells and so on. The poor little server guy (or woman) spends hours, no days in front of the pc to try and keep up with the demands - they scour the forums such as this or RZ to try and find something new, maybe a new spell to keep people happy etc.

What I find odd - is people will happily play and pay for real server which is 1x exp and RARE items - probably as its up 24/7 and LOTS of people play.

My main points are this:

*If your bored and have played a few Servers already, then move onto a diff game or go back to CS or something...

* Hosting a server takes up your time (lots of) and all your bandwidth, maybe that shocked you in that you thought you could carry on voice chats with Bill-o-boy and Webcam to your mate over in the states? Your PC will be running 100% CPU power 100% of the time, this will shorten your CPU Life, allow a noisy PC to run in background 24/7 and the pc cannot be used for anything else.

My advice to people thinking about running a server - think long and hard before making it live, make sure it all works and the updates are online before you even tell your mother never mind posting a advert on LOM. Be prepared to sit in front of that PC for days at a time when problems come about, people compain and so forth. Work out a drop system and STICK with it, changing the drop file live is bound to cause a un-even server as rares get dropped etc. Dont run a public BETA test and then wonder why people are complaining about problems or your server is never on as you reboot all the time to fix things - get a mate to play online with you and find the bugs etc - ALL BEFORE GOING LIVE....

OK long post - sorry --- any views?

gud post, thats wat happened to me, i was bored on mir so much...and now, after 18 months, im bak, over the last 4 yrs ive played Mir, in between, ive quit once so often, as i level on a server for about 1 months, then the server goes down and never comes up, and u think, ive wasted my time leveling, but hey, if u think like that, we shouldnt even play games...

I did say sorry for the post been like LONG, i will have a go later at making it a lot shorter, probably loads of waffle in there tbh. There was a few main points I was trying to get across..

1. Hosting ANY server will take up a LOT of your time and your resources.
2. People playing a game to death yet keep coming back for more, then complaining as they are bored.
3. Asking for stuff which is next to impossible to code in (any server).

On the hosting front, just go pop along to the posts in the advert sections, go count how many servers get put up without been tested, have problems, no updates online etc. It amazes me that people rush up a server then when the Mass of posts/PM get too much, the server dies - sad..

Servers dies mainly as people dont estimate what is involved, im not suprised when people complain as server are up and down like a coiled spring for various reason - People playing are expecting 24/7 uptime, 100% bug Fixed and new stuff every week or so - yet they pay ??? Yup Nothing - beat me tbh.

*** Right, edited post, hopefully still has the same sort of feel but slightly shorter ***

People don't give a **** about how much work people put into their server's.. There are alot of "GUTLESS" peeps out there that should be shot.. Mostly just young punk kids..

very good post Demonic..that fully reflects my view :)

so people pls keep your little bugged not even alpha state private server (propably setup in a few days or even hours) away from public..otherwise u would ruin most of the fun and gaming experience an MMORPG can give the players...
