RPG = Role playing Game - you take on a fantasy Char doing quests etc, as per real life, you slowly get stronger the longer you play. MMO bit - this is a RPG at heart but the difference is it allows many people to play online at the same time. Professional Companies who run MMORPG want YOU the customer to pay money each month, as its a business - longer you play, the more they make - simple.
Private server code was "leaked" as in not meant to be public domain, people then took this code, upped the exp and messed with the values, thus unbalancing the game as a whole..
People do not want to play a Private server for months, years etc - they want to level FAST through the noob stages and get all the kit that is uber rare on a real server. They get to level 50+ and have everything in game after a few months of playing...Where do they go from here? well they can join another server, start noob level again, try out the maps renamed with different mob names and meet another set of people to play along side. They have probably played MIR2 to death on the real server, maybe private servers to and now trying mir3 hoping for a new experience maybe.
Now they get bored, they post like a mad person on the said forums, we want better mobs, more quests, better items, new spells and so on. The poor little server guy (or woman) spends hours, no days in front of the pc to try and keep up with the demands - they scour the forums such as this or RZ to try and find something new, maybe a new spell to keep people happy etc.
What I find odd - is people will happily play and pay for real server which is 1x exp and RARE items - probably as its up 24/7 and LOTS of people play.
My main points are this:
*If your bored and have played a few Servers already, then move onto a diff game or go back to CS or something...
* Hosting a server takes up your time (lots of) and all your bandwidth, maybe that shocked you in that you thought you could carry on voice chats with Bill-o-boy and Webcam to your mate over in the states? Your PC will be running 100% CPU power 100% of the time, this will shorten your CPU Life, allow a noisy PC to run in background 24/7 and the pc cannot be used for anything else.
My advice to people thinking about running a server - think long and hard before making it live, make sure it all works and the updates are online before you even tell your mother never mind posting a advert on LOM. Be prepared to sit in front of that PC for days at a time when problems come about, people compain and so forth. Work out a drop system and STICK with it, changing the drop file live is bound to cause a un-even server as rares get dropped etc. Dont run a public BETA test and then wonder why people are complaining about problems or your server is never on as you reboot all the time to fix things - get a mate to play online with you and find the bugs etc - ALL BEFORE GOING LIVE....
OK long post - sorry --- any views?
