Windows 7

As vista requires more ram than XP, does Windows 7 require more ram than Vista?

Im planning on upgrading to 7 soon, but i only have 2gb of ram atm. I plan on using 7's virtual server (which apparently solves all the issues of vistas compatibility)

but don't really want my PC to be sluggish.

Any thoughts?

No. 7 is more scalable than Vista. It will scale based on how much ram you actually have but you need 1gig at the least.

7 works perfectly smooth on most netbooks so if your system is faster than a netbook then you'll be fine :P

ye, I think I read Windows 7 was more like XP in terms of resources rather than what Vista uses

Iv looked at a few reports, and everyone whos used it as their main OS for the last few months havnt found any problems with it.

Cant wait to actually be able to run windows xp and older apps without any problems.

Windows 7 is awesome no doubt about it. I cannot use XP anymore (Then again I couldn't use XP since Vista either)

In terms of compatability what are you actually planning on running that doesn't work on vista/7

mostly the really old style windows 95/98 games, which ran fine on XP but fail on Vista. But also the ability the play mir3 servers which use the stupid Holley loader im hoping would work.

From what iv seen the Windows 7 Virtual Machine runs exactly like Virtual Machine 2007, but has XP preloaded, and runs selected programs in XP, instead of having to boot up an entire OS.

Does the holley loader work for u in windows 7? and have you tried any really old style games on it?

Yeah um Virtual PC isn't designed for gaming really. I know King doesn't work on Vista or 7 but Holley worked fine on Vista (Haven't checked it on 7).

In terms of really old games you might have some trouble getting them working but I have had GTA 1 running fine on 7. That would be the oldest game I tried

yeah i realise virtual machines dont support graphics acceleration, but i wouldnt have thought that wld b much of a problem with old style games (even tho mir3 keeps giving me error when its loading)

For me, when i load the holley loader (bluish icon of a woman) it just sends me an error straight away. Yet works fine wen i load it in my virtual machine running XP.

And also, what about codecs in windows 7. i did hear alot of codecs were preloaded on so you didnt have to use external programs to play things like avi's or mp4s. is that right?

I know divx is built in. I otherwise I'm not sure. Most of the things I watch are mkv's so windows doesn't play them.

Oh you mean the server files? Yeah no they won't work. Mir2 ones work fine but Mir3 doesn't

Is windows 7 worth buying straight away when it goes live? Will it have alot of compatibility issues with games, as that's what I mainly use it for.

i havnt tried any games yet. combat arms doesnt run the autopatcher, so im setting it up on the vm and hoping i can transfer it over to make it work.

id expect all new games will work, as the basics of windows 7 hasnt really changed from vista.

i think its mainly applications which require specific operating systems to run on which will take a while to get working.

its still definately worth the buy imo tho. tho id go for the ultimate version, home edition seems to be lacking alot of key features.

as soon as it goes live ill def be getting it (wont be buying it tho). even with the many apps not working on the beta version, ive already fallen in love with it.

As for the old games, generally older DOS based games take some messing around, although you can typically run them in comptiability mode back to Windows 95, 98 and XP.

So Vista only lived 2 years. It's not a bad OS as win me. The other versions last 3-4-5 years! There are still many users using XP and won't upgrade to vista or w7.

it has to be 64bit upgrade to 64bit. 32 to 64 bit has to be a clean install not an upgrade. I assume 64 to 32 is the same thing. Retail upgrade box comes with both 32 and 64 bit dvds.
