sorry, i dont think you can jail break the 3g version and if you put the new update on it then there really is no change to jailbreak untill the crackers get round to it
I personally love the phone, had mine since oct 08 even though it burns a whole in my wage with the tarrif i've got i still belive its worth it love some of the apps other than that its not a bad little toy

i wouldn't think so. it's totally functional for just about everything u need as standard, so why change it? I love mine, haven't even considered doing anything to it.
It won't. You can just restore to the unjailbroken firmware if you want. And well if the phone doesn't turn on they won't know it was jailbroken.
In terms of Jailbreaking you should go for it. It opens your phone to doing so much more (MMS, Copy/Paste, Themes, VideoRecording etc) It's impossible to screw up the jailbreaking process nowadays and even if it fails the iPhone has two recovery modes so if one doesn't work the other will.
Oh and every AppStore application for free if your into that sort of thing..
aparently they still have ways of knowing as someone i know voided their waranty and they wouldn't replace it even though the phone was bricked and wouldn't even switch on.

TBH it is a really good piece of kit, But my whole outlook on the iphone is that they should have made an itouch and stopped there "bolting" a cell network onto it just made it a bit poo. i LOVE my iphone but only because i jailbroke it and its no longer used as a phone as a internet/app device its second to none. in full:
jailbreak your iphone its totaly worth it!
Can you bluetooth/MMS on the iPhone yet?
My step brother just got one and he cant do the above, which is pretty pants?
Not sure if Jailbreaking allows you to? Looking at Milos post you mentioned MMS, but what about Bluetoothing files over to other phones?

when was the last time you used mms? i know the first time i used it, way back in 1999 on my erricson t68. Jokes aside i dont think the iphone can handle bluetooth profiles needed to do file transfers but it will work with headsets. but with the likes of wifi now days whos really gonna mms when you can email over the phone for much less
its a no and yes answer. you can only use bt for file transer if your iphone is jailbroken and you have a 3party app from Cydia called ( you got it)Ibluetooth
MMS will be officially supported by the iPhone 3g and the newer iPhones when the 3.0 firmware comes out. Otherwise you have to use a jailbroken app called SwirlyMMS.

No company will ever go through the effort of lifting the chip that holds the firmware off the iPhone to see if it is jailbroken or not. It's not worth it. Your 'friend' probably had water damaged his phone which is detectable by Apple.

reason why they voided warranty was because he had modified the software on the phone with 3rd party software that wasn't wasn't approved by apple, which breached certain terms and conditions. In my case i'm not wrong.... have also known some1 with a nokia 5800 who couldnt claim a warranty due to just changing the product code on it and installing different region firmware.
BT file transfer is easy my HTC HD does it. Apple are just being apple, like trying to get support for a bt dongle on a mac mini that works, and like i have found when there is a product that works its taken off the market.
How are you finding the HD?

I have the HD, but unsure if i'm totally happy with it so far. I dont pay anything, so may sell it and get a new contract.
