Bonjour,
The team have been discussing the possibility of potentially having all skills available in shops at a high price dependent on the level and use of the skill.
Having skills in shops is apparently quiet common in many mmo's but as I have only ever played Mir as an mmo (mostly years ago at that), I am in two minds on whether or not this would be welcomed or not.
I didn't want to make another drastic decision without first gathering some metrics to base it upon (so here we are)...
Pros:
- Skills have been reported as being to rare and unrealistic to achieve in a given time frame.
- Players would rely more on skill of the game rather than advantage of skill(s).
- Each class would have access to his or her tools to be able to pvp/hunt at full potential.
- Potentially eradicate some balance issues.
- Provides incentive to level.
Cons:
- Skills have been reported as fine and achievable.
- Potentially introduce some balance issues.
- Not in line with Mir's traditional grind factor.
- Potential increase of bots to gather gold to buy skills.
My opinion:
It goes against traditional Mir's grind factor(s), yes, however, if I was a player I could/would potentially want this, I could focus on grinding items/hunts to gather gold to access the skills that would ultimately unlock enjoyment of the game.
We are introducing new skills as of 2.0, some of which I can custom coded myself and it would be nice to have them be used and tested.
With the above being said, I can foresee a switch in balance (ie wizards no longer moaning, but another class doing so), as well as a potential increase in botters to farm gold to buy the skills (although we have an active campaign against bots).
I would really like the gather the thoughts of the community, is this something you may want to see or is this unrealistic idea?
Bare in mind that the skills would also be obtainable via drops and that the prices of certain books are likely to be very high.
Thoughts?
Sam
I voted "Yes". Like all players, I have my own opinions on the game should be. I also have played since euro beta and have spent ALOT of time playing Mir and have been addicted to the point of obsession much of the time the game has been out. I also quit college to play in the early days which was a very bad idea and a low point of life :-P
So, I feel I am fairly justified to have my say as I have spent more time on Mir than I have on another game or pasttime.
In all the time I have played, I have concentrated on solo grinding and not group hunting or boss killing. I have played a Wiz the majority of my time, followed by Warrior/Taoist in equal parts and on Chronicles, an Archer.
I have never been able to get the skill books available to my character level by the close of the relevant servers. This means I have been able to get to the level required for the likes of FF etc and not been able to afford the spells. I do not think this is the way the game should be, even if this IS the way it has ALWAYS been. I feel disappointed that I made the effort to level to 44+ etc and cannot use the skills, playing a wizard at L44 using tbolt/firewall/lightning is not true to the character.
I absolute think this is a good idea and is more in line with other games (like WOW etc) where you level knowing the book is in store, rather than find FF and make a Wiz from scratch to use it etc. I don't feel the current system for skills books where you have the same chance of getting your max skill as winning the euro millions is fair. Also, I think it only advantages the players who can farm bosses all the time which tends to be certain guilds.
I think this should happen, but I'm just one voice among many, I felt strongly enough I wanted to have my say in full though!
I do think this could open a can of worms with spell balancing etc though. I think it will potentially show FF is overpowered and some classes with all their skills are not meeting the grade. I believe this issue should be addressed when it arises however, rather than disguised by the fact spells are so rare.
