Sounds to me like its your friends that ruin lives, nice people you assoicate with....

well seems your friends aint much better than people who pull knives up to people. Need walking **** like this out of our country. Iv had someone give me a good smack for sitting on their steps, which were the steps at the bargate castle in southampton, far as i knew the council owned them. When i have kids i will make them follow in self defense which i have done all my life, but i will also teach them to walk away and avoid a fight as much as possible. Is not worth risking your life trying to be the tough guy, no1 likes a tough guy who thinks he can beat down everyone,there will always be someone out there faster and better prepaired than you, then your in trouble.
Thing is, i have friends that are the same as what mapa said... yes its wrong, no i dont agree with it, but what can you do? Cant just stop been friends with them because you dont agree with it, especialy when you have known some of them all your life.
Needless to say though, I dont hang around with them no more, just go for a drink with them now and then for a catch up.

Knife crime is pathetic, my girlfriends brother or his friend stabbed someone because they kept phoning them.
Every single day I could easily get in a confrontational situation with someone but I really don't see the point in it. Its not that I am scared its because I don't see the point. You don't know what someone is packing with them you really don't. I used to see a fight as a big deal but at the end of a day a fight is a fight nothing more nothing less. For the sake of your own pride would you risk your life? I have a lot of pride but I also read all of a situation and analyse all the possible out comes and to be honest walking away is generally the best out come.
If someone pulled a knife on me I honestly don't know what I would do. Well I do, Im a big guy and I cant run so I would have to stand there and try and defend my self but hopefully it would not come to that.
To the OP I think you did the right thing, if someone pulls a knife on you this a life altering thing they have done, psychologically it has a major impact and well depending what they do it can kill you.
Most confrontations are about front, you snarl you give before the fight is about to kick of can scare away people, most people that pull a knife are doing it to try and scare you away (Not all but most) and if you don't back down it can either go one of two ways they bottle it or they lash out.

i had 2 guys pull a knife on me about 2 years back. just because i wouldnt give em a cig. so they jumped me wen i was walking home at night. wasnt stupid enough to fight back, they took my wallet and phone, even fkin keys. shook me up for a while, but made me more aware. so in a way im glad it happened.

some guy got stabbed few months down near the pub i drink. Some chavs were kicking his fence, he kindly asked them "please could you not kick my fence." So they stabbed him in the side, pethetic and makes me angry. All chavs should be used to send out to places like iraq to fight our wars, no loss to the community.

Unfortuantly being from sheffield, you grow up with people like that, they can be a good bunch of lads. But I don't agree with what they do, or how they react towards someone.
But since having family, don't seem them as much as no real time to go out these days.
Thought i'd update u guys on whats happend, he got 120 hours community service and a 6months referal order. Justice? ha.
