Which do you prefer, or feel is better?

Which would you rather spend you wages on, or save up your pocket money for?

Which do you use?

The RADEON® X800 graphics technology is the world’s fastest and most powerful VPU*, setting a new standard in graphics performance and visual realism. With up to 16 pipelines, higher clock speeds and breakthrough image enhancement technology, RADEON® X800 Graphics Technology ushers in a whole new gaming category called High-Definition Gaming.

So.. If i upgrade graphics card, where how does it work? 'How would I install it?'.

Well, im buying a GeForceFX 5200 128DDR, and its only costing me £37.

To install one, you would simpley open up your case, remove your old GFX card from the PCI slot, and replace it with the new one. Then put the case back together, and turn on your system. If you have XP (home or pro) windows will probably already have the drivers installed, hence everything would be done to an acceptable standard, but really you want to take a trip to your manufacturers website and download the latest drivers for optimum performance.

If you buy a new card its more likely to be an AGP slot, but its easy enough to see the only slot it'll fit into.

edit: I voted ATI.

Well im not going to vote at this point in time for a couple reasons.
As for as older generations, like the [radeon 8500vsGeforce 3] [radeon 9700vsGeforce 4] [radeon 9800vsGeforce FX] ATI undoubtedly owned the gfx market (except for the 8500vs the soon later relased geforce 3 ti 500). As for now, when you look at the lower end cards in this new generation, [x800 pro vs geforce 68000 gt] the gt most of the time comes out on top, due to its 16 pipelines over the x800 pro's 12. However, when u look at the top cards, the 6800 ultra extreme vs the x800 xt pe the fps in games are incredibly close. In the end I would have to say ATI for their amazing track record, but im waiting for them to get their opengl drivers *more* optimised at which point i think ati will reign again for the top card.

EDIT

Smeagol, go to start>run> and type 'dxdiag' and hit enter, and the info u seek will be listed under the display tab.

I totaly disagree on PC upgrades unless your obvisously really rich.
How come?

As for the question, I've gone with nVidia. I use nVidia currently (GeForce FX 5200), I used them in the past (TNT2 and GeForce 2) and as such I would rather spend my money on an nVidia card. However, since seeing the specs of the Radeon X800 XT I'm seriously thinking about making that my next upgrade but I still have doubts. It's quite unnerving moving from one manufacturer to another when that's all you've used in the past, hence my vote. I'm in agreement with Urbanfox though, once they optimise their OpenGL drivers, ATI will soon be the choice of card.

On a side note; nVidia's "ressurection" of SLI is looking quite interesting.

At this point in time, i'd say Nvidia.

ATI used to make damn good cards (see 9*00 series), but now they're employing tactics which Nvidia have used in the past, which i consider extremely lame.

Really, if you want a future-proofed card, which will do what it needs to do from day 1, go for an Nvidia card (GeForce 6800 series). If you want a card which currently has lower OpenGL performance, but will most likely increase in the future, go for a ATI card (Radeon x800 series).

Bear in mind though, you should buy the card to match the game you want to play. If you want games based on Doom3's or Crytek's engine, buy an Nvidia. If you want HL2-based or Unreal3 based games, buy an ATI.

Actually the crytek engine is currently D3D and the x800 class pulls a good 5fps+ higher when it comes to the flagship cards, xtpe and UltraE. And when u get 1600x1200 4aa/8af the x800 pro competes well with the 6800 ultra. However on two levels of the game, supposedly where the new SM3.0 paths are more effective (research and regulator), the 6800UE and U come out on top.

** The UE also wins on the final level (volcano) when SM3.0 is enabled, however when it is not, the xtpe has a higher fps at high res, however with aa/af enabled the gap is closely adjusted.

I have to vote nVidia because I have always used nVidia cards even when ATI have turned out on top, I believe nVidia are much more of a "professional" company and support their cards alot better than ATI. Also my mate has one of the newer Radeons (not sure which one) and his problems with games are never ending :)

Sounds like its his computer not the VC, mine works fines, and ATI is a very professional company.
