Weird A2 Computing (cpt5) question:

As you may or may not know, all exams have mark schemes. The one for A2 Computing:CPT5 is full of little gems that make you wonder what the script writers were on.

SO, to assure myself that I'm not crazy, I put the following two questions to you ppl (REAL questions from a REAL paper).

1. Joe wants to upload a file to a webserver, what protocol is he likely to use for this?

2. Joe later wishes to make a new directory on the webserver, what protocol would he use for this?

NOTE: The mark scheme only allows for ONE possible answer, despite the fact thats theres a plethora of real world answers that (at least in my opinion) should be at the very least, allowed as 'alternative' answers. Therefore giving more than one answer per question will result in having no mark awarded!

I'll post back tomorrow telling you what the scheme said!

Maybe its an obvious paper? Which in that case would be ftp?

If you were to ask how to do it the average website joe would tell you use a ftp client.

By the way when it said protocol I thought it went like TCP or UDP.. ftp a protocol? :-x would call it a piece of software that uses tcp to connect to the server.

I would think SCP, but put down FTP down for both due to the fact its aimed at average people

computing is AQA. and yeah, thats ftp i think. though since u ask us this question, im lead to believe the answer isnt as simple as that.

I highly doubt they'd put anything to do with SCP in an A Level Computing exam

Ive had questions like that, stick with ftp examiners dont like smart arses so stay away from scp. Also dont assume the examiner is thick like you have always been told. I did that in a computer studies exam and the examiner got pinickety.

Yeah, I speak examiner - I meant 'per question'. You did specify 'FTP' for both though - so your fine anyway. Anyone else can just edit their post since I won't mark them till tomorrow at around 4-7ish depending on when I get back.

Answer to Q1: FTP
Answers to Q2: Telnet

No other answers were allowed for either question.

When I said FTP (always go for the simplest thing) for Q2, I got told off for protesting the abscence of acceptance for new fangled technologies.

Thats really stupid, I would use a ftp client why would I use telnet to make a new folder when I just used a ftp client(more user friendly) to upload files? lol they need to really re-think these questions.

you would think they would make the questions and answers along the lines of new technology because surely all these people going into IT fields are supposed to take technology forward, not backwards.

Telnet?!? wtf? Show of hands who still uses telnet for anything apart from raw socket testing? (and even then i tend to make a custom app to do it cos then i can make it perform certain required actions)
